Apple Simplifies OS Naming: Say Hello to iOS 26, macOS 26, and More

At WWDC 2025, Apple surprised everyone with a major rebrand of its entire family of operating systems. Moving forward, Apple will name its OS versions based on the year, starting with “26” — a fresh approach meant to simplify things for users across all devices.

Instead of juggling different version numbers like iOS 18, watchOS 11, or visionOS 2 all at once, Apple is now unifying its naming convention. So this year, you'll see updates titled iOS 26, macOS 26 (aka macOS Tahoe 26), iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

The goal? Make it easier for users (and developers) to instantly recognize if their Apple devices are running the latest version — no more comparing mismatched version numbers across platforms. It also brings Apple in line with naming strategies already used by companies like Microsoft and Samsung, who name their software releases by year.

This announcement was part of a larger wave of updates introduced at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Beyond the name change, Apple also revealed a stunning new design language called “Liquid Glass,” which brings a transparent, fluid aesthetic to the interface — the most radical visual update since iOS 7.

So while the version numbers may now be easier to follow, the tech behind them is only getting more sophisticated — and beautiful. One thing’s clear: 2026 is shaping up to be a big year across the Apple ecosystem.
