Microsoft Is Finally Fixing the Start Menu in Windows 11 — Here's What's New

If you've ever found the Windows 11 Start menu a bit cramped or confusing, you're not alone. Good news: Microsoft is listening. A major redesign is rolling out, bringing a more spacious, customizable, and user-friendly experience to the Start menu — and it's exactly what many users have been asking for.

Bigger, Scrollable, and More Functional

The updated Start menu, now in testing with Windows Insiders, ditches the clunky two-tab layout. Instead, everything is on a single, scrollable page. You no longer need to click over to "All Apps" — it’s all there, front and center, with a new and improved layout.

Microsoft is also introducing two new ways to view your apps:

  • Category View: Apps are grouped into helpful categories, with the most used shown first.

  • Grid View: Apps are listed alphabetically but displayed in a horizontal grid for quicker scanning — especially helpful on larger screens.

Turn Off "Recommended" (Finally)

One of the most requested features is now here: the ability to disable the Recommended feed. That means no more clutter from recent files or suggested apps if you don’t want them. Your Start menu, your way.

More Pins, More Space

This new design isn't just easier to use — it's also larger and smarter. Microsoft has increased the number of pinned app slots, allowing up to 8 columns of pinned apps, which is great for those with bigger monitors or multi-tasking setups.

When Will You Get It?

The refreshed Start menu is currently available to Windows Insiders via build 26200.5641 in the Dev Channel. Microsoft has also started backporting it to 23H2 versions, meaning even more users could see it sooner rather than later.

If you're in the European Economic Area, you may have to wait a bit longer for some features — like the new Android and iOS device integrations — but the core Start menu improvements are on the way for everyone

With this update, Microsoft is clearly aiming to make the Start menu more intuitive, less cluttered, and easier to navigate — a much-needed step forward for Windows 11 users.
